Laser Cataract Surgery Is a Brilliant Procedure!
When Is Laser Cataract Surgery Recommended?
Laser cataract surgery is one of the most advanced technologies, making cataract removal even more precise and safer. During the procedure, the eye’s natural but clouded lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens. This intervention aims not only to restore vision but also to improve patients’ quality of life.
In the past, cataracts were only removed when they caused significant vision loss. Today, we can opt for surgery even when mild symptoms appear, and femtosecond laser technology makes the intervention even gentler. Timing is particularly important, as the surgery can become more complex as the cataract progresses, so early intervention may mean faster recovery time and lower risk.
Why Choose Laser Cataract Surgery?
Traditional cataract surgeries also deliver excellent results, but the femtosecond laser procedure offers numerous advantages. With the femtosecond laser, the initial steps of lens surgery can be performed with exceptional precision. During the procedure, the eye’s anatomy is automatically mapped, allowing for personalized surgery. The femtosecond laser creates a perfectly circular opening on the lens surface and virtually eliminates the risk of complications associated with the step called capsulorhexis. The femtosecond laser then pre-fragments the lens into small pieces so the surgeon can remove it more easily in the second half of the surgery.
The femtosecond laser procedure causes less trauma to the eye for several reasons. One reason is that fragmenting the inner part of the lens does not require great mechanical force, unlike traditional surgery. Furthermore, since the lens has been pre-fragmented by the femtosecond laser, the ultrasound energy used during cataract removal is minimized. This results in shorter recovery time, fewer complications, and faster visual acuity restoration. The femtosecond laser method is especially recommended for patients who require special considerations, such as astigmatism correction, or when we plan to implant a premium intraocular lens.
Which Intraocular Lens Should We Choose for Laser Cataract Surgery?
Selecting the intraocular lens is a key element of surgical success. Traditional multifocal lenses, also called trifocal lenses, enable clear vision at nearly all distances, thus minimizing the need to wear glasses. They are a good choice in many cases, however several eye conditions may be exclusionary factors (e.g., corneal disease, retinal disease, glaucoma), and certain professions and personality types may find it more difficult to adapt to the visual experience provided by this type of lens. With these multifocal lenses, light scattering complaints around lamps may occur relatively frequently, and contrast sensitivity will also be somewhat weaker.
EDOF (extended depth of focus IOL) lenses provide extended depth of field compared to basic monofocal lenses. EDOF lenses represent a modern solution for those who want sharp vision mainly at intermediate and distance ranges, but also wish to perform everyday near tasks without glasses if possible, and do not mind wearing glasses for reading books. Toric versions of these lenses are also available, which correct astigmatism, thus further optimizing visual outcomes in such cases.
The new-generation multifocal PRO IOLs are currently the best choice, as they come closest to the visual experience provided by natural lenses. They provide continuous sharp vision at all distances, light scattering complaints do not occur, and there is no reduction in light intensity or contrast sensitivity.
The selection of the intraocular lens depends on the patient’s lifestyle, preferences, and the unique condition of their eye. You must discuss these with your operating physician before the intervention in every case, as they are intended to provide a lifelong solution.
How Should We Prepare for Laser Cataract Surgery?
During the thorough eye examination before surgery, the physician not only assesses the condition of the cataract but also the entire health of the eye, and then the patient and physician together select the type of intraocular lens. The physician can recommend a lens, but the patient must make the final decision in this matter.
It is important that on the day of the intervention you avoid using cosmetics and makeup around the face and eye area, and arrive with an escort. Eat normally and take any medications as usual.
The intervention is quick and painless, performed under local anesthesia with eye drops.
Why Is It Worth Choosing Laser Cataract Surgery?
The innovative technology of laser cataract surgery represents the forefront of surgical interventions. The precision of the laser and personalized solutions all contribute to the patient being able to quickly return to their usual daily routine. Although femtosecond laser technology may involve higher costs, its advantages—such as lower risk and more accurate results—are worth the investment for many.
