Dr. Róbert Gergely
Ophthalmologist

Dr. Gergely Róbert szemész szakorvos

Professional Experience

I completed my training at the Department of Ophthalmology, Semmelweis University, where I had the opportunity to become familiar with and treat a wide spectrum of ophthalmic diseases.

I am a specialist in traditional and modern laser cataract surgery, as well as premium intraocular lens implantation, and a recognized expert in vitreous and retinal diseases. Committed to modern technology, I apply specialized laser treatments across numerous areas of ophthalmology, in which I have world-class experience—several of which I was among the first to introduce in Hungary.

With solid knowledge and extensive experience, I confidently apply the latest pharmaceutical treatments, the most advanced surgical techniques, and the most modern laser interventions (laser treatment of eye floaters, premium secondary cataract laser treatment, retinal micropulse laser therapy).

In my practice, I follow national professional guidelines and international protocols, and I present new treatment methods at professional forums. For nearly two decades, I have been an active member of national and international professional societies.

My practice is characterized by a patient-centered approach: I treat not only the disease but the patient. An integral part of this is ensuring that the patient understands their condition, which is why I dedicate sufficient time to each patient so they leave well-informed.

In addition to perfecting ultrasound cataract surgery techniques, I became familiar early on with femtosecond laser cataract surgery, about which I published a scientific article as early as 2012. Among the intraocular lenses available for implantation, I always use the highest quality options, and I was among the first in Hungary to begin using extended depth of focus lenses.

Among retinal diseases, my primary research area is CSCR (central serous chorioretinopathy). Thanks to my in-depth knowledge, I have been applying the most advanced pharmaceutical and laser procedures for treating this condition since the beginning of my professional career. Currently, I primarily use the cutting-edge Navilas micropulse laser system, with which I have nearly a decade of experience. I have similarly extensive experience in micropulse laser treatment of diabetic macular edema, which I apply regularly.

In laser treatment of eye floaters (vitreolysis), I have internationally recognized expertise and routinely treat even the most complex cases. Shortly after this procedure emerged worldwide, I was able to extensively practice and master the intricacies of this specialized technique, which fills a gap in the field of ophthalmology.

I was among the first to master premium secondary cataract laser treatment and currently use only this technique for posterior capsular opacification.

I consider the diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases a challenge; in such cases, in addition to familiarity with the literature, I regard thorough history-taking as crucial.

During the 12 years I spent at the Department of Ophthalmology, Semmelweis University, in addition to patient care, I participated in clinical research, teaching Hungarian and international medical students, and training residents in general ophthalmology and surgical techniques. I am a regular participant and speaker at professional congresses and continuing education courses. I regularly publish and review articles in recognized national and international journals.

I provide medical consulting to various national and international companies, and I serve as an advisor to artificial intelligence companies in the areas of healthcare research, development, and patient care.

Surgical Competencies

For easier orientation, this section of the professional biography presents the surgical skills in which Dr. Róbert Gergely, ophthalmic surgeon, has specialized expertise.

In the university clinical environment, I was also responsible for the pharmaceutical and surgical treatment of complex cases, the experience of which still benefits me today, but due to the lack of hospital infrastructure, I do not currently perform some of these, such as:

  • other glaucoma laser treatments (CPC, trabeculoplasty) *
  • intravitreal steroid implant insertion *
  • other retinal laser treatments (photodynamic therapy) *
  • surgical management of traumatic injuries *
  • eyelid surgery (stye, tumors, eyelid malposition) *
    *currently unavailable

Professional Publications

In addition to acquiring and developing surgical skills, scientific publications form part of the professional biography. In both treatment and research, Dr. Róbert Gergely frequently attempts to elevate patient care to a higher level through new or less familiar approaches.

Due to original ideas and approaches, his research has been published in numerous Hungarian and internationally recognized journals; in some, he was the first Hungarian ophthalmologist to publish. Due to the novelty of the topics, the articles often appeared as paid content in these professional journals; however, thanks to fee waivers, the majority are freely accessible below to both colleagues and interested patients.

Media Appearances

I strive to inform patients about the importance of ophthalmic prevention and modern procedures through various media platforms.
